The Story of Perth City Farm March 2013 from Perth City Farm on Vimeo.

Want to know more about us?

Perth City Farm is an urban community garden, education and network centre. We promote healthy environments that are productive and diverse. Founded in 1994 as an initiative of the youth branch of Men of the Trees in Western Australia. Before becoming an organic permaculture centre, the site was used as a scrap metal yard and a battery recycling plant. Perth City Farm for the past 19 years has transformed the site with the help of hundreds of hours of labour in order to demonstrate how heavily degraded land can be rehabilitated.

Perth City Farm promotes environmental awareness and responsible practices by providing information, training and hosting community-based projects:

a) Providing space for disability groups to learn how to propagate plants, art work for groups such as Nulsen Association and The Centre for Cerebral Palsy

b) School Tours – sharing community gardening and the use of small spaces to grow food

c) Workshops – a variety of hands-on skills taught from gardening to cooking to building; to skills taught that are no longer available in main stream or at home

d) Work-for-the-dole Programs with Mission Australia; Community First International and Communicare

Perth City Farm also supports the local music and art community through regular concerts, festivals and exhibitions.

Perth City Farm offers a place for those to rejuvenate, be connected and join our team of volunteers and staff to build an oasis in the heart of the city surrounds. We come together every day to feed our team of helpers, mostly picked from our garden.

By becoming a founding member you will be supporting a number of valuable projects:

a) Constructing and building a “Growing Gardens” area at the entrance to PCF. This will feature a vertical edible wall, and small display gardens with the view to everyone having the opportunity to learn how to grow food in small spaces. The construction of this project has been sponsored by the City of Perth.

b) The opportunity to learn more from our Aboriginal Elders in the Aboriginal Story Telling Corner built by Atlas Iron Volunteers, through regular tours.

c) Constructing and building an “Abilities Nursery” with the view to assisting people with disabilities to work and learn skills of operating a nursery. We will also be running a retail nursery 6 days per week.

d) Sensory Garden – in partnership with Nulsen and The Centre for Cerebral Palsy this will provide a beautiful space with water sounds, music, touch garden and more.

e) Building & Construction – partnering with Construction Training Fund and Polytechnic West for the delivery of Vocational Education Training specifically a Cert 2 in Building Maintenance to selected Yr 11 & 12 school Students from Perth Metropolitan Schools – beginning March 2013.

f) Partnership with Central Institute of Technology to deliver Cert 2 in Horticulture and Cert 2 in Resources and Infrastructure, beginning February 2013.

g) Commercial production for growing mushrooms in re-used coffee grinds from local cafes, sponsored by BHP Billiton and City of Perth.

h) Developing a commercial worm farm operation to focus on diverting organic waste from local businesses in East Perth. Volunteers from Woodside have assisted in the construction phase of housing the worms.

i) Weekly farmers market operating amongst the gardens to assist in promoting their produce – monthly themes eg. bush tucker and food demonstrations!

j) In partnership with Central Institute of Technology we are hosting a 20 week course named the GATE (Gaining Access Through Education) program for those with disabilities.

k) Sponsored by Hatchd, the chicken surrounds will be rejuvenated. Their team will be volunteering time here to assist with design, water systems, feeding lots and shaded areas.

l) Nestled amongst our market garden we have built a water feature aptly named the ‘Wargul’. Plants for this water feature have been donated by Steve Wood and the pump donated by HATCH Engineering.

Only 1,000 bricks available for naming rights.

Congratulations to Chris and Callum for finding the lucky egg and winning a bicycle! Some of the our chicks were adopted out and the rest will now enjoy a happy & long life at Harry Toutikian’s & Michelle Trovato’s organic farms.

This week sees all our regular stall holders back, plus some special features, like Ali Jardine with her book “The Colour of Health – Food for Life”.

Come down and listen to some of the great tunes by Stu Orchard (thanks to WAAAM!) and enjoy a beautiful morning amongst the vegetables with the kids.

Unfortunately Michelle Trovato will not be attending in person this week however she will be supplying her vegetables to us, so we will have all her usual great Biodynamic offerings on the City Farm stall and on Sona Toutikian’s stall. Our condolences go out to the Trovato family for their loss this week.

This week’s markets sees most of our regular stall holder attending, but some are taking the chance to spend time with their family – Michelle and Harry will be here. We have ordered big for our City Farm stall to ensure that we have enough vegies and fruit to get you through the festive break. ALL organic!

Stu Orchard will be along to provide the tunes with thanks to WAAAM, and it’s another great opportunity to get to the country in the city if you want to make a detour on the road to good health!

Plus we have our Easter Egg hunt for the kids, with one lucky finder snatching the chance to win a kids bike (2-3 yr old) if you find the lucky egg.

Plus we will have 20 little chicks for the kids to pat, and Isabella will be bringing PIP along and if you are nice, you can get the chance to get friendly with a very happy lamb – just ask Smella – PIP is happy!!!
