Michael’s vision is to cool Australian cities by 1 degree by 2020. To bring about such generational change Michael works with citizens and communities to cool streets by growing food and plants there. Cool streets cool the air and cut down air con and energy use and pollution, and provide food people may walk to instead of drive to buy.If enough streets and communities cool their streets Michael calculates each Australian state may take a power station off line or cut back it’s use during peak summer demand times.Michael has come to this point after realising his house, Sydney’s Sustainable House, fell far short of what’s needed to create sustainable cities. As the growing, transportation, buying, storing and waste of food is the second highest cause of climate pollution after coal fired power stations there’s an urgent need for every Australian city to create cool streets.
The options are affordable, proven, and right outside the front doors of our houses, offices and available particularly on the one third of the land taken up in our cities – our roads. Michael has drafted a plan with financial incentives, red tape cutters, examples, and quick pay-back rewards for businesses and residents who take up the plan’s options for sustaining our soil, water, energy and food resources; the whole plan may be downloaded free from the web here: http://theplan.sustainablehouse.com.au/
Here’s a useful 5 minute video showing how businesses and communities can easily rearrange daily life without spending more money – it shows what Michael loves to show: there is no such thing as waste, only a failure of imagination: https://vimeo.com/44146167
